Wynyard Waste Transfer Station (WTS) tender awarded to City Mission.

City Mission & Waratah-Wynyard Council join forces through new strategy to divert waste from landfill

The Waratah-Wynyard Council is providing a new opportunity to support the local community by diverting waste from landfill. Continuing from the progress made through the 2019 Waste and Resource Recovery Strategy, Waratah-Wynyard Council has awarded the tender of the Wynyard Waste Transfer Station (WTS) to City Mission.

Predominately known for its Mission Shops, City Mission also operates four Resale, Salvage and Recycling Centres in the North and Northwest of Tasmania. The Mission has more than 10 years’ experience in waste diversion, resource recovery, recycling, and resale. The partnership with City Mission, and the continued development of the WTS Resale Centre “Tip Shop”, will align with Council’s goals to divert 50% of waste from landfill by 2024/25.

City Mission will commence operation of the Wynyard Waste Transfer Station on 1 July 2023. From then, residents will be able to donate goods, volunteer, and shop at the Resale Shop.

“We are excited to continue and deepen our involvement in the Waratah-Wynyard community through this shop. The shop will be initially stocked with quality items donated at other NW sites, so is a great place to find a bargain right from the start. The proceeds will be reinvested in the community to support City Mission’s work with children (Inside Out 4 Kids), Drug and Alcohol Services and Emergency Relief on the NW Coast”, said Stephen Brown, City Mission’s CEO.

Currently, hundreds of Waratah-Wynyard residents reach out to City Mission North West for Emergency Relief support every year. 21% of all the Emergency Relief provided through the Burnie Hub in the last 12 months has directly impacted the lives of Waratah-Wynyard residents.

“This well-rounded collaboration between Waratah-Wynyard Council and City Mission will not only maximise recycling and reduce unnecessary waste into landfills - it will also provide fantastic benefits to the local community”, said Mayor Mary Duniam.

The fees and charges for the Wynyard Waste Transfer Station were adopted at the June Council Meeting and ensures access to the WTS during 2023/24 will continue to be free entry for members of the Waratah-Wynyard municipality.
