The Ark, 9 Killafaddy Road, St Leonards
Guest speakers Angelo Diedricks and Wendy French
The Alongside Mental Health & Wellbeing Conference explores transformative approaches to providing support and care to anyone experiencing mental ill health, and raises awareness of the assistance available in the community. This conference will not only benefit mental health professionals, but also friends, family members, colleagues, support workers, teachers and teacher assistants, pastors and church-goers, carers, and anyone acquainted with someone experiencing a mental health challenge. You will gain confidence in how to engage with those experiencing mental ill health, or a mental health crisis, and be equipped with skills and strategies to walk the journey with them.
This one day conference brings together evidence based content from thought leaders in mental health including: Dr Angelo Diedricks, Psychiatrist and Wendy French, Master Instructor for Mental Health First Aid.
"Mental health problems are diverse, can be complex and navigating treatment options can often be intimidating. " Dr Angelo Diedricks.
“Discover the power of recognising the signs that someone may be struggling with a mental health issue and providing support to those in need.” Wendy French.
Evening Workshop* - Angelo's 3rd session "Connection and spirituality in mental health" is part of an Alongside faith-based evening workshop. This workshop is FREE and is held between 7pm - 9pm on the same premises (The Ark) on the same day (October 17th) as the main Alongside day session.

“The conference was fantastic. It was wonderful that we heard from so many different people about different topics. I particularly enjoyed the Mental Health First Aid presentation and am now in the process of organising an onsite Mental Health First Aid course for myself and my work colleagues.
The conference took the stigma away from discussing mental health and gave us practical tips for having open communication around a topic that is sometimes difficult to talk about. It is valuable to have been taught practical tools that we can use in both personal and work situations, when and if the need arises.” Alison, General Manager, The Valley Network, 2023

Alongside 2024 includes a 45-minute Q&A session featuring the panel of Alongside guest speaker Dr Angelo Diedricks, City Mission General Manager Client Services Narelle Howell, and Missiondale peer worker and lived experience advocate Tim Bird.
- Narelle Howell has a long background in nursing, across a variety of fields, most recently in the Alcohol and Other Drug sector. Since moving in to management, Narelle has continued her interest in this sector and is currently on the Board of the Alcohol, Tobacco and Drug Council of Tasmania and is passionate about reducing the stigma for those experiencing addiction related issues in the community.
- Tim Bird is a lived experience advocate and peer worker at Missiondale - a City Mission residential rehabilitation and recovery facility situated in Evandale, Northern Tasmania. Having completed the AOD program at Missiondale in 2022, Tim was granted scholarships from ‘The Alcohol and Other Drug Council’ (ATDC) and the ‘University of Tasmania’. Focused on advocacy, equity, and the evolving relationship between language and identity in AOD contexts, Tim openly shares his personal accounts of navigating Tasmanian healthcare services whilst experiencing substance dependence and having unmet mental health needs.
