City Mission’s Devonport Mission Shop has a fresh new look — and it’s thanks to the hard work and dedication of our incredible staff and volunteers.

Over the past few months, the store has undergone a series of improvements to make it warmer, brighter, and more welcoming for our customers. Updates include:

New heating throughout the store to make it more comfortable year-round.
Fresh carpet and a coat of paint, giving the shop a modern, clean feel.
A full internal relay, creating a more open and easy-to-navigate space.
New shelving and a front counter, while re-using existing fixtures wherever possible.

A team effort

What makes this transformation so special is that so much of the work was completed by our own people. The painting was carried out by City Mission staff and volunteers, while the internal store relay was completed by Julie and her dedicated team.

Some volunteers even gave extra time — including weekends — to make the transition possible. The new carpet was scheduled to take five days to install, but thanks to the Devonport staff who pulled up the old carpet themselves, the job was completed in just three days.

Julie Bissett, Shop Manager Devonport, said the transformation has already made a huge difference to the team and customers alike.

“The shop feels so much lighter and more inviting now, and you can really see the difference in how people respond when they walk through the doors. Our volunteers and staff worked tirelessly to make this happen — many of them giving up their own time to help with painting, moving shelves, and even pulling up the carpet. It’s been a true team effort and I couldn’t be prouder. What makes it even more special is knowing that every improvement we’ve made here means a better experience for our customers, and ultimately more support for the people City Mission helps every day,“ Julie said.
