Recycle Rewards

Recycle with a purpose

Northern Tasmania’s Recycle Rewards depots are operated by City Mission with two depots located in Launceston and Burnie.

Our staffed depots are undercover, drive thrus that allows people to unload their containers safely, efficiently and out of the elements.

Our depots can process over 100 containers per minute and provide you with a cash refund on-the-spot.

We also offer services that cater to community groups, businesses, and events for further opportunities to recycle with a purpose. Find out more about our business services:

What’s Eligible?

  • Recycle Rewards is Tasmania’s container refund scheme which will commence 1 May 2025.

Recycle Rewards is a Tasmanian Government initiative funded by contributions from the beverage industry. It will offer a 10 cent refund to consumers for returning eligible drink containers at refund points across Tasmania.

The scheme aims to reduce Tasmania’s litter of drink containers by up to half, create new economic opportunities, generate new jobs and turn eligible drink containers into new recycled products.

  • This is more than a recycling initiative – it’s a powerful new way for our community to reduce wasteearn refunds, and support people in need. Every 10-cent container recycled through our depots helps fund our work and reduce landfill.

This initiative aligns perfectly with who we are – people helping people. We’re not only making it easier to recycle, we’re offering a chance to do good with every can, bottle or carton.

  • Our depots are specifically designed to make it easier, faster and more enjoyable for you to return your eligible containers and collect your refund, over and over again. Our team has been expertly trained to guide you through the process of recycling your containers in our undercover drive-thru's that can do 200 containers a minute. It is the perfect environment for families and groups to see the process in action, learn how the Recycle Rewards depots are benefiting their community and collect their refund faster.

  • Most 150ml to 3L drink containers will be eligible for a 10-cent refund, as long as they’re in good condition (uncrushed, empty and with the barcode intact). This includes;

    • Aluminium cans

    • Plastic bottles

    • Glass bottles

    • Cartons (under 1L)

    • Steel bottles/cans

Look for the 10c mark as a general guide.

  • These items aren’t accepted but can still go into household recycling. They’re often used at home.

    • Plain milk containers

    • Flavoured milk containers (1L and over)

    • Glass wine bottles

    • Glass spirit bottles

    • Cordial bottles

    • Juice containers (1L and over)

    • Plastic containers (under 150ml)

Household food containers (e.g. tuna cans) are not eligible for refunds.

  • The selected eligible drink containers for Recycle Rewards are those that are most commonly found as litter in the state’s streets, beaches, waterways and parks. Tasmanians can continue to recycle other non-eligible drink containers such as wine, cordial, milk and glass spirit bottles in their kerbside recycling bin.

  • Unfortunately, we can't accept items that are listed as ineligible on the reyclerewards.com.au website.  You will need to take these items with you and dispose of them in your general recycling bins through the Council collection.

  • If your drink container does not have a label it may not be recognised as an eligible drink container and will not be eligible for a refund.

  • No, please do not crush your drink containers. Drink containers must be identifiable as an eligible drink container to receive a refund. It is recommended that drink containers returned for a refund meet the following requirements:

    • The drink container is not damaged to the extent that it is unsuitable for recycling

    • The barcode can be scanned, and

    • The label can be read.

  • No, you don’t! Just make sure that your drink containers are empty, and that lids are on if possible.

  • Yes.  We provide on the spot cash refunds for all eligible containers returned to us.

  • Yes, if you are in a hurry, can you drop-off your containers for us to process. We will tag them and you will receive an electronic refund once they have been processed.

  • You sure can.  We're about to launch a delivery/collection service to commercial customers.  We'll launch this soon, but in the interim you can email us as cds@citymission.org.au
