George Town Mission Shop celebrates 1,000,000 containers processed through Recycle Rewards

City Mission staff and volunteers with representatives from TOMRA Cleanaway and George Town Council celebrating 1,000,000 containers processed

A big milestone has been reached in George Town - 1,000,000 containers have now been processed through the City Mission George Town Mission Shop Reverse Vending Machine (RVM) as part of Tasmania’s Recycle Rewards program.

It’s a huge community effort. Every bag of bottles and cans returned through the RVM is helping keep valuable materials out of landfill, supporting a cleaner local environment, and turning everyday recycling into real community impact.

City Mission George Town Mission Shop Manager, Ian Neilson, said the milestone reflects the generosity and consistency of the George Town community.

“This is one of those moments where you can genuinely say the community made it happen. Every return is someone choosing to do a small thing that adds up to something massive - and we’re so grateful for the support George Town continues to show,” Mr Neilson said.

City Mission’s General Manager Social Enterprise, David Morgan, said the milestone shows how powerful Recycle Rewards can be when communities get behind it.

“One million containers is an incredible achievement, and it speaks to what happens when a community commits to a simple habit that creates a ripple effect,” Mr Morgan said.

“Recycle Rewards is good for the environment - but it also helps transform lives and communities, because it supports the work City Mission delivers across the North and North West.”

Recycle Rewards is Tasmania’s container deposit scheme delivered by TasRecycle and TOMRA Cleanaway on behalf of the Tasmanian Government. City Mission acknowledges the support of TasRecycle, TOMRA Cleanaway and the George Town Council in achieving this milestone.

Our thanks and appreciation also to Corey and Nat from TOMRA Cleanaway for being in attendance and presenting the special 1,000,000 certificate.

The George Town milestone comes as City Mission continues to see strong momentum across its broader Recycle Rewards network.

City Mission operates Recycle Rewards depots in Launceston and Burnie, which have also recently reached major milestones - 4,000,000 containers processed in Launceston and 3,000,000 containers processed in Burnie.

Together, these milestones represent thousands of everyday actions by Tasmanians choosing to recycle - and choosing to back practical, local impact at the same time.
