City Mission to cease operating Wynyard Waste Transfer Station
City Mission will cease operating the Wynyard Waste Transfer Station on 31 May 2026, with its current arrangement at the site coming to an end.
City Mission has operated the Wynyard Waste Transfer Station on behalf of Waratah-Wynyard Council as part of its broader social enterprise work and has been proud to provide this service to the local community.
The organisation acknowledges this change will be significant not only for employees directly connected to the operation, but also for the community members who have engaged with the site over time.
City Mission CEO Dr Jo Fearman said several factors informed the decision, including changes to the operating requirements for the site, which ultimately meant it was no longer viable for City Mission to continue operating under its model.
“City Mission has been proud to operate the Wynyard Waste Transfer Station and to serve the local community through this work,” Dr Fearman said.
“A change in operators is not easy, and we know it will be disappointing news for those directly affected, as well as for others in the community who have valued the service.”
Dr Fearman said City Mission’s immediate focus was on supporting impacted employees through the transition; while also recognising the broader contribution the site and team had made in the region.
“Our priority is to support the staff affected by this change with care, respect and compassion,” she said.
“We are also incredibly grateful for the contribution the Wynyard team has made, and for the role this site has played in serving the North West community.”
City Mission said the team at Wynyard had made a meaningful contribution through their professionalism, commitment and service, and that this work had been valued both within the organisation and by the community. Through this work, City Mission has also been proud to support waste, sustainability and recycling efforts across North West Tasmania.
The organisation remains committed to Wynyard through the Wynyard Mission Shop, and to the broader North West through its ongoing services and supports, including InsideOut4Kids and Family Services. City Mission also remains proud to employ local people, work alongside volunteers and contribute positively to communities across the region.
Dr Fearman said City Mission’s connection to communities in the North West remained strong.
“City Mission is proud to be part of the North West community, and we remain committed to being a trusted organisation that contributes positively to the region,” she said.
“While this particular chapter is coming to a close, our broader commitment to supporting people and communities across the North West continues.”
Questions regarding future operation of the site should be directed to Waratah-Wynyard Council.
