City Mission Winter Appeal

We believe that everyone should be able to stay warm, have a roof over their head and have food on the table during the coldest months.

Charlie's Story

Charlie* came to us lonely, grieving the sudden death of his wife, and struggling to pay his bills.The aged pensioner confided that life had become tough lately.

Charlie had been trying to catch up with the cost of his wife’s funeral and a weekly rent increase of $30. He had stopped using his heater and was skipping meals to make ends meet. And then, on top of all this, he lost his wallet.

But this story does have a happy ending! When City Mission’s Family Services team met Charlie they literally transformed his life.

He was given food and food vouchers, and a caseworker helped him with his outstanding bills. Charlie no longer has to choose between putting food on the table and staying warm.

Charlie was gobsmacked! He didn’t realise just how much help was available to him and he was so thankful to our caseworker and City Mission for helping him get back on his feet.

Where there is love, there is hope, a truth that people like Charlie need to see in action.

And it’s because of your generosity that we can make that a reality.

This year we have seen the sting of rental stress, the result of a widening gap between wages and housing affordability. Unfortunately, this means we are gearing up for a very busy winter. The colder months are always harder as people stretch their budgets to cover heating costs.

Every dollar donated during City Mission’s Winter Appeal will help us continually help those in need. We believe that everyone should be able to stay warm, have a roof over their head and have food on the table during the coldest months.
