Orana House: Part of the Solution for Homelessness
Posted on May 24, 2016
As the availability of low cost housing continues to be stretched to the limit, Orana House is making headway in providing solutions for crisis and longer term supported accommodation.
Orana House operates at full capacity which is an indication of the continuing need for this type of accommodation.
Craig has been one person who has benefited from the services offered at Orana House and he tells his story here:
I had to leave my public housing unit because I was being harassed and abused by local youths who would come and vandalise my property.
“It got to a point where I just didn’t know what to do. Housing Tasmania had promised me relocation but it was taking some time for a new place to be available. Finally, near breaking point from anxiety and depression I went to Orana to ask if there was anything they could do. They took me in, firstly as an emergency measure but then as a longer term resident. I realised I had debts owing to Housing Tasmania which, die to me state of mind I had overlooked. I made arrangements to settle all that and the guys at Orana introduced me to support programs to help me with some of my personal issues. I started going to AA and signed up as a volunteer with the Mission.
After nearly nine months at Orana and a lot of help from the staff, I was nearly debt free and had been offered a unit by Housing Tasmania. I am very thankful to the staff that supported me through one of the toughest times in my life. I’ve learned how to look after myself better and discovered that helping others is as important as helping yourself.”
