Located in our Frederick Street facility and having been around for the past 50 years,Morton's Place serves about 80 to 90 meals to homeless and hungry people every day. It's perhaps not the Ritz but if you are doing it tough, Morton’s Place can provide temporary respite. Many of these people are marginalised and disconnected with their community. In response to this need we organise different outings and activities for those attending Morton's Place . Through the connections we make we are able to help the patrons through challenging situations and, sometimes, life threatening circumstances. Mentoring is done one to one as the supervisor and other workers build relationships with these people offering friendship and a listening ear. Morton’s Place is open daily, Monday to Friday from 8 am till 1 pm. And then serves an evening meal to our Crisis Accommodation Unit residents.
City Kitchen operates under the guidance of co-ordinator Betty Hite OAM. Her team of over 100 volunteers goes out every Monday and Wednesday evening at 6pm, till about 9 pm, delivering warm clothing, bedding and food to lonely, hungry and homeless individuals and marginalised families. Schools, clubs, businesses and church groups give their valuable time cooking and catering for this vital service along with community groups who pledge food and financial assistance. We are most grateful to all those who volunteer to maintain this service in Burnie.
You will find the City Kitchen Trailer in the following locations on Mondays and Wednesdays:
7.00 - 7.20pm Portside Car Park
7.30 - 7.40pm Cenotaph (Burnie Park)
7.50 - 8.30pm Community House Car Park, Shorewell Park
With the help of generous donations received from many supporting businesses, churches and individuals, our Family Services is able to provide food parcels to clients who find themselves in desperate circumstances. Because of varying food preferences, clients are able to choose their own mix to a certain value. When available fresh fruit and meat along with refridgerated items are added to basic essentials of dry and canned food and personal care items.
